Kobe神戸

Japan's stylish cosmopolitan port, wedged between sea and mountains — the waterfront of Harborland and Meriken Park, the lantern-lit lanes of Nankinmachi Chinatown, the hillside Western mansions of Kitano, herb gardens and one of Japan's three great night views above the city, and of course world-famous Kobe beef. Note that the Shinkansen stops at Shin-Kobe; the real downtown hub is one subway stop south at Sannomiya.

Neighbourhoods

Harborland & Meriken Park

Kobe's photogenic waterfront — the red Port Tower, the open Meriken Park with its 'BE KOBE' sign and earthquake memorial, the Maritime Museum, and the Umie-Mosaic mall with a harbour Ferris wheel across the water. Flat, breezy, fully stroller-friendly and beautiful when the harbour lights come on.

Sannomiya & Nankinmachi

Kobe's downtown core — the transport hub of Sannomiya, the lantern-strung lanes of Nankinmachi Chinatown, the covered Center-gai and Motomachi arcades, the central Ikuta Shrine, and the city's celebrated Kobe-beef teppanyaki counters. Where you eat, shop and connect.

Kitano Ijinkan (Western Quarter)

The steep hillside above Sannomiya where Meiji-era foreign merchants built their Western mansions — the 'ijinkan', now open to visit, with a hilltop shrine and chic cafés between them. Charming and photogenic, but built on genuinely steep slopes and stepped lanes — not stroller- or wheelchair-friendly.

Nunobiki & Mt Rokko

The green mountain wall right behind the city — the Nunobiki ropeway from Shin-Kobe up to herb gardens with sweeping bay views, the classical Nunobiki Falls a short hike from the station, and higher still the Mt Rokko lookouts that give one of Japan's three great night views. Nature and panoramas minutes from downtown.

Where to stay

Sannomiya & Nankinmachi

Sannomiya is Kobe's true downtown hub — JR, Hankyu, Hanshin and subway lines, the arcades, Chinatown and Kobe-beef restaurants all here. The best-connected, liveliest base.

Harborland & Meriken Park

The flat, stroller-friendly bayfront of malls, the port tower and Meriken Park — relaxed, scenic and lovely at night, a short walk or one stop from Sannomiya.

Getting there

Shin-Kobe Station (Sanyo Shinkansen)

The Shinkansen stop, ~13 min from Shin-Osaka — but it sits up the hill, NOT downtown. Take the subway one stop (~2 min) south to Sannomiya, the real city centre. (Shin-Kobe is also the base of the Nunobiki ropeway.)

Sannomiya Station (JR / Hankyu / Hanshin / subway)

Kobe's downtown hub and the station you actually want — JR Special Rapid reaches it in ~20 min from Osaka and ~30 min from Kyoto. Chinatown, the arcades and the waterfront all radiate from here.

Kobe Airport (UKB) / Kansai (KIX)

Kobe Airport (domestic + some international) links to Sannomiya by Port Liner in ~18 min; Kansai International is reachable by the Kobe-Kansai Bay Shuttle ferry.
