Neighbourhoods
Odori & Central
The civic heart of Sapporo, built around the long green Odori Park that hosts the Snow Festival and summer beer gardens, with the TV Tower, the historic Clock Tower and red-brick former government office close by, and the Nijo seafood market and Tanukikoji arcade a short walk south. Flat, wide and easy to navigate.
Susukino
Northern Japan's biggest entertainment district — a blaze of neon, izakaya, bars and a famous ramen alley, plus the Sapporo specialities of soup curry and Genghis Khan grilled lamb. Tame by reputation and fun to wander after dark; quiet by day.
Maruyama & the West (Chocolate & Views)
Sapporo's leafy western side, spread out and best with a car: the whimsical Shiroi Koibito chocolate-factory park, the forested Hokkaido Shrine and Maruyama Zoo, trendy café streets, and the Mt Moiwa ropeway for one of Japan's great night views. Greener and calmer than the centre.
Otaru
A romantic former herring-and-trade port ~40 minutes north-west, built around a stone-warehouse canal lit by gas lamps, with a steam-clock music-box hall, glassware studios and some of Hokkaido's best sushi and cheesecake. An easy, lovely day-trip by train or car.
Where to stay
Odori & Central
The central park-and-grid core — on the subway crossing, walkable to the sights and a step from Susukino's food. The best all-round base.
Susukino
The nightlife and dining district — ramen, soup curry, Genghis Khan BBQ and bars on the doorstep. Lively and late, busier at night.
Getting there
New Chitose Airport (CTS)
Hokkaido's main airport — ~37 min to Sapporo Station on the JR Rapid Airport train, plus international and domestic flights. The natural place to pick up a rental car.
Sapporo Station (JR Hokkaido hub)
The rail hub for the airport rapid and the ~40-min line to Otaru. The spread-out west-side sights (Shiroi Koibito Park, Mt Moiwa) are far easier with a rental car than by transit.
