Germany's two great city breaks, and they are nothing alike. Berlin is polycentric and unpolished: five museums on one island in the Spree, the Wall left standing where it mattered, Tempelhof's runways turned into a park, and districts that each want a day of their own. Munich is compact and monied: the Residenz and the Pinakotheken, the Frauenkirche over the rooftops, surfers on a standing wave in the middle of a city park, and beer gardens under chestnut trees. One district a day in either, every fact verified before you fly. Two things worth knowing early: a card sign here often means the domestic Girocard, which foreign cards cannot use, so carry cash — and shops shut on Sunday, more strictly in Bavaria than in Berlin.
