A romantic former herring-and-trade port ~40 minutes north-west, built around a stone-warehouse canal lit by gas lamps, with a steam-clock music-box hall, glassware studios and some of Hokkaido's best sushi and cheesecake. An easy, lovely day-trip by train or car.
