Okinawa沖縄
Japan's subtropical south — the former Ryukyu Kingdom, with castles and pottery lanes in Naha, the whale sharks of Churaumi Aquarium in the north, the resort beaches and dramatic Cape Manzamo of Onna, and the seaside shops of American Village. Strung along a long, warm island and effectively car-essential; relaxed, blue-sea and family-friendly.

Neighbourhoods
Naha (Shuri & Kokusai-dōri)
Okinawa's capital and arrival point — the Ryukyu royal castle of Shuri on the hill, the bustling Kokusai-dōri shopping street, the Makishi food market and the potters' lanes of Tsuboya. Walkable and monorail-served; the one part of the island you don't strictly need a car.
Motobu & Churaumi (North)
The far north-west and the island's headline family day — the whale sharks of Churaumi Aquarium, the beaches and dolphins of Ocean Expo Park, the scenic bridge to Kouri Island and the dreamy fukugi-tree lanes of Bise. Spread out and made for a rental car.
Onna (Resorts & Cape Manzamo)
The west-coast resort belt — big beachfront hotels, the dramatic 'elephant-trunk' cliff of Cape Manzamo, calm swimming bays and the famous Blue Cave snorkelling. The classic place to slow down by the sea; effectively car-only.
Chatan & American Village
A breezy mid-island seafront built around Mihama American Village — a colourful cluster of shops, restaurants and a Ferris wheel beside Sunset Beach, with a strong post-war American flavour and easy family dining. A relaxed sunset stop between Naha and the north.
Where to stay
Onna (Resorts & Cape Manzamo)
The west-coast resort strip — big beach hotels, Cape Manzamo and snorkelling, central for exploring north and south by car. The classic Okinawa beach base.
Naha (Shuri & Kokusai-dōri)
The capital — the monorail, the airport, Kokusai-dōri's shopping and dining, and no car needed within the city. Best for a first or last night and arriving/leaving.
Chatan & American Village
Mid-island American Village — seaside shops, sunset beach and family dining, a handy car base between Naha and the north.
Getting there
Naha Airport (OKA)
The island's gateway, linked to central Naha by the Yui monorail. While a rental car is essential for exploring the north (aquarium) and west coast (Onna), it is highly recommended to rent the car only when leaving Naha, as city traffic is heavy and parking is expensive.
Yanbaru Express / Airport Limousine
Express buses link Naha Airport with Onna's resorts and the Churaumi Aquarium for those without a car, but they are slow and infrequent — a rental car is strongly recommended for the north and west coast.
