Mt Shosha & Engyō-ji
A forested mountain north-west of town, climbed by ropeway to the sprawling 1,000-year-old Engyō-ji temple complex — cliff-built halls, ancient timber sanctuaries used as a film set for 'The Last Samurai', and cedar-shaded pilgrim paths. A serene half-day above the castle bustle.

Around Himeji Station and the castle approach — the hotels, arcades and food are all here, and the castle is a flat 15-minute walk up Ōtemae-dōri. Most visitors come as a half-day trip, but it's a quiet, easy overnight.

Himeji Station (Sanyo Shinkansen)
~30 min from Shin-Osaka and ~15 min from Shin-Kobe by Shinkansen. The castle is a straight, flat 15-minute walk (or short bus) north up Ōtemae-dōri from the station.
JR Special Rapid (Shin-Kaisoku) from Osaka/Kobe/Kyoto
The cheap, frequent way: the JR Special Rapid reaches Himeji in ~1 h from Osaka, ~40 min from Kobe-Sannomiya and ~1 h 30 from Kyoto — covered by the JR pass and ideal for a half-day trip.
